The ruling on using salts, minerals and therapeutic (medical) mud etc. obtained from the Dead Sea, depends on the difference of opinion among the historians about whether this is the same area where the nation of Prophet Loot (peace be upon him) used to live.

Most of the scholars specializing in Qur’aanic exegesis (tafseer) and historians attestthat this is the same place where the sinful people who engaged in the crime of homosexuality from among the people of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) used to live. Based on this, it is not permissible to benefit from anything produced from this sea. Moreover, one should not even visit them for tourism. If he happens to pass near it, he should pass this place quickly and weep. ‘Abdullah Bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that “While we were going for the Battle of Tabuk and when we reached the places of the dwellers of Al-Hijr, Allah’s Apostle said about the dwellers of Al-Hijr (to us). “Do not enter (the dwelling places) of these people unless you enter weeping, but if you weep not, then do not enter upon them, lest you be afflicted with what they were afflicted with.” [Al-Bukhari (423) and Muslim (2980)]

Imam Ibn Hajr (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “This applies to the dwelling of Thamoud, or to others having their characteristics (a people tormented in this world due to their sins and transgression), even though they (Thamoud) became  the cause of what the Prophet (peace be upon him) said.” (Fath Al-Bari 6/380)

‘Abdullah Bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that, “the people landed at the land of Thamud called Al-Hijr along with Allah’s Apostle (peace be upon him) and they took water from its well for drinking and kneading the dough with it as well. (When Allah’s Apostle (peace be upon him) heard about it) he ordered them to pour out the water they had taken from its wells…” . [Al-Bukhari 3199]

Based on this, one should not benefit from any Dead Sea product. The least that can be said is that it is best to refrain from them and seek other harmless and permissible things.

Allah knows best.
