Translated for ISLAMQA.

The question is about to the words of rabia al-adhawiyya.

she mentions in one of her poems that metaphorically she will burn the paradise with a torch and she will extinguish the fire of hell with a bucket of water so that the believers only do actions and deeds only for His sake, not for the sake of paradise and hell.

Is this statement correct?

All Praise is for Allah.

This quote has not been authentically reported by Rabi’ah Al-‘Adawiyyah (Rabi’ah Basri) or anyone else, nor can a Muslim ever say that since Paradise and Hellfire will remain forever and never end. Indeed, Allah said in the Qur’an, “…a party will be in Paradise and a party in the blazing Fire.” [Surah Al-Shoora, verse 7]. Allah also said, “…and whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will be admitted to Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise), to abide therein (forever), and that will be the great success. And whosoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, and transgresses His limits, He will cast him into the Fire, to abide therein forever; and he shall have a disgraceful torment.” [Surah Al-Nisaa, verse 13-14]

Abu Sa’eed Alh-Khudri (may Allah be please with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah’s Apostle said, “On the Day of Resurrection Death will be brought forward in the shape of a black and white ram. Then a call maker will call, ‘O people of Paradise!’ Thereupon they will stretch their necks and look carefully. The caller will say, ‘Do you know this?’ They will say, ‘Yes, this is Death.’ By then all of them will have seen it. Then it will be announced again, ‘O people of Hell !’ They will stretch their necks and look carefully. The caller will say, ‘Do you know this?’ They will say, ‘Yes, this is Death.’ And by then all of them will have seen it. Then it (that ram) will be slaughtered and the caller will say, ‘O people of Paradise! Eternity for you and no death O people of Hell! Eternity for you and no death.”‘ Then the Prophet, recited (the verse of Qur’an): ‘And warn them of the Day of distress when the case has been decided, while (now) they are in a state of carelessness (i.e. the people of the world) and they do not believe.’ (19.39)” [Sahih Al-Bukhari 4453 and Sahih Muslim 2849]

In another narration in Sahih Al-Bukhari (6182) and Sahih Muslim (2850) from ‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “When the people of Paradise have entered Paradise and the people of the Fire have entered the Fire, death will be brought and will be placed between the Fire and Paradise, and then it will be slaughtered, and a call will be made (that), ‘O people of Paradise, no more death ! O people of the Fire, no more death ! ‘ So the people of Paradise will have happiness added to their previous happiness, and the people of the Fire will have sorrow added to their previous sorrow.”

Hence, there it is impossible to have the Paradise burnt by hellfire or to have hellfire extinguished by water.

Please see question number 26792.

Pious and God-fearing people perform deeds for the sake of Allah, with desire to enter His Paradise and fear of entering His fire, as Allah said about the Prophets, “Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before Us.” [Surah Al-Anbiyah, verse 90]

Allah knows best.
