I recently translated two fatwas from Islam_QA. They give seemingly contradictory answers to two questioners, but a little more reflection would show that each is appropriate in its own place:

1)

There is nothing wrong if a group of Muslims call themselves Ahlul Sunnah or Ahlul Hadith or other names which show the correctness of a Muslim’s ways and adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah and show that this group is different from innovators. There is no doubt that “Muslim” is a glorious name, but…..regretfully Muslims have become divided into so many different groups, such that this person is Sufi, that one is a Shia and there is another one who is “liberal”! Indeed, there are some who ascribe themselves to Islam, while they are not even Muslims, like Baha’is and Barelvis.

Hence, if a Muslim says about himself that he is one of the Ahlul Hadith, it means that he wants to distinguish himself from these (deviant) groups and show that he is belongs to the Ahlul Sunnah wal Jama’ah.

Allah knows best.
