I recently translated two fatwas from Islam_QA. They give seemingly contradictory answers to two questioners, but a little more reflection would show that each is appropriate in its own place:
1)
There is nothing wrong if a group of Muslims call themselves Ahlul Sunnah or Ahlul Hadith or other names which show the correctness of a Muslim’s ways and adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah and show that this group is different from innovators. There is no doubt that “Muslim” is a glorious name, but…..regretfully Muslims have become divided into so many different groups, such that this person is Sufi, that one is a Shia and there is another one who is “liberal”! Indeed, there are some who ascribe themselves to Islam, while they are not even Muslims, like Baha’is and Barelvis.
Hence, if a Muslim says about himself that he is one of the Ahlul Hadith, it means that he wants to distinguish himself from these (deviant) groups and show that he is belongs to the Ahlul Sunnah wal Jama’ah.
Allah knows best.

surprising isnt it people who calls themself ulema confuse general ummah even when quran call all believer muslim in sure haj & order nabi (ASWS ) to be among muslim sure namal ayah 91 & we can find lot of reference in quran & sahee ahadith that allah & our nabi (ASWS ) call all the person who say shahada muslim….& for ur proof that ,others say that they r shia baha is & others, then let us say they all wrong in their identity ,for this we will not have identity crises & we will start call ourself with masalaki name bcos this is not sunnah but biddah & and will amounts to rejection of quran & allah &will make us munafiq bcos we wiil do as quran say, yaqulun mala tafalun sure saff.our manhaj is quran & sahee hadith ..then we should prove every act according to quran & sahee hadith & sunnah wama alainal balag & allah knows best qaff nun
